Competition as a Conflict Style

"There are those who see each workplace conflict as an opportunity to 'win.' They go all out to win, often at the expense of others. ('Some gotta win, some gotta lose.') They show concern only for what they want. This competitiveness can take the form of either overt aggression (rudeness, loud voice, angry facial expressions) or move 'passive' or covert aggression (innuendos, gossip, back-stabbing)." (Smallwood)

Competition is a complex style with a wider range of degrees than the other conflict styles. A person employing the tactics that make up the competition style may engage in behavior that ranges from verbal threats to physical violence. Slipping into a negative cycle, which leaves both parties in a no-win situation is especially easy in using this style.

Tactics used within the competition style include:

  • Personal criticism
  • Hostile imperatives/questions
  • Presumptive remarks
  • Denial of responsibility
