Collaboration as a Conflict Style

"When you collaborate, you work with the other person to mutually solve the problem in a way that recognizes and honors the goals of each. Be honest and direct, while being considerate." (Smallwood)

Using collaboration is typically more difficult than the other styles. Collaboration requires that both parties actively engage. However, unlike the other styles, collaboration is more likely to produce conflict resolution that both parties feel is equitable. Pseudo-collaboration may be used by parties with high power to give the appearance of cooperation. The higher power party must recognize their power and how it effects the other conflict party to avoid pseudo-collaboration

Tactics used within the collaboration style include:

  • Denial and equivocation
  • Topic Management
  • Noncommitall remarks
  • Irreverent remarks
